The Thriller That Inspired ‘John Wick’ Is Officially Leaving HBO Max

Posted on August 22, 2026 By

After a 10-year gap during which he experimented with long-form streaming and glamorous advertisements, director Nicolas Winding Refn made his long-awaited return to feature filmmaking with Her Private Hell. Starring Sophie Thatcher and Charles Melton, the movie divided critics and audiences and grossed $1 million at the box office. Refn’s last film was the 2016 thriller The Neon Demon, which made around $3.5 million; before that, he directed Only God Forgives, which ended its run with $10 million. All of this is to say that Refn hasn’t replicated, nor shown particular interest in replicating, the box-office success of 2011’s Drive. The movie took a decidedly arthouse approach to mainstream entertainment, and grossed more than $80 million at the box office. Drive remains one of the most acclaimed cult classics of the 2010s, and now, the movie that it was modeled on is available to stream on HBO Max for its fans.
