Western audiences will probably associate Akira Kurosawa with epics such as Seven Samuraiand Ran, and, of course, the widely influential drama Rashomon. However, the legendary Japanese filmmaker also made a quietly meditative drama that is just as well-regarded. The movie in question was released in 1952, which makes it 74 years old. It’s currently available to stream in the United States on HBO Max, giving a new generation of audiences a great opportunity to check it out. That said, they may want to hurry, because it’ll be removed from the platform soon.
