Robert Towne’s name will probably always be tied first to Chinatown. The 1974 screenplay still holds a major place in American film writing, and when Towne died in July 2024, people measured the rest of his work against that one movie. But the second act of his career, when one of Hollywood’s most celebrated writers started directing his own films, remains somewhat overlooked.
